When you want to start learning the game of golf and you are interested in finding an instructor to teach you, the first thing you should look at are the qualifications of the instructor. Not every instructor is good for every student. Communication between the instructor and student is vital. A good instructor should gather information about you and determine your personal learning style; kinesthetic, auditory, visual or a combination.
The next thing you want to do is get into clubs that will enhance your learning and not get in the way of your progress. Even when you are just beginning, you should be practicing with clubs that are a close fit for you, so they don’t hinder your progress. Exact fit clubs can come later, if you decide you really want to get better and truly learn how to score and be competitive. When just beginning, I would recommend going to a retail store and getting a boxed set that comes with everything, even a bag. Make sure you talk to your instructor about what is right for you and allow them to make a professional recommendation.
Next up, are the actual lessons. I highly recommend starting out with learning how to putt. After all, it is 50% of the game and a good portion of your score. This starts you on a path of learning the basics and developing your hand eye coordination. After putting, I would recommend working on chipping. Chipping is when you take a shot just off the green with a lofted club and get the ball to roll towards the hole. Next, you should continue on to learning a pitch shot. A pitch shot is just a shorter version of the full swing. A pitch is simply a shot you hit higher into the air to carry on course obstacles like a sand bunker or a pond. After you mast the pitch shot, you will have the basics of the full swing down. To master a full swing you simply swing the club back further and turn more when connecting with the ball.
At this point you will either be addicted to this crazy game or decide it's not for you. This is the point when you will need to decide if you want to continue with weekly lessons. During your initial lessons your instructor should also be teaching you the rules of the game, proper etiquette and conduct, how to get a tee time, how to check in, how to operate a golf cart and specific strategies for playing golf.
